Riding the Vermont Rail

BY DANIELLE FRAWLEY

Passengers of all ages are sure to enjoy a trip throughout Vermont's rolling landscapes on two of the railroad's options: the Champlain Valley Flyer takes passengers from Burlington to Charlotte, and the White River Flyer makes excursions from White River Junction to Thetford. Each flyer offers a variety of activities and dates on which to enjoy them.

For a truly unique pastoral train ride, the White River Flyer leaves from the station in White River Junction, an easy drive from Burlington down the interstate I-89 to southern Vermont. Nothing quite says Vermont like a slow ride alongside the Connecticut River on a beautiful summer afternoon. Relaxing scenery includes wildlife, fields, and the calm river adrift with kayakers and boaters waving as the train passes by.

The White River Flyer departs twice daily. The morning train leaves at 11:30 am, and arrives back in White River Junction at 1:30 pm. The afternoon train leaves at 2:30 pm returning at 4:30 pm. Riding the rail can be more than just a pristine ride through the countryside; it can provide added opportunities to hop on and off the rail and enjoy sights and activities along the way.

One example is an activity in Norwich for family fun: the Montshire Museum of Science with its hand-on learning activities and exhibits. For details on the Montshire Museum read the article on page 34.

Another enjoyable stop is the Cedar Circle Farm in Thetford. Cedar Circle Farm is an epicenter of activity with an array of fresh farm fare, workshops, and educational opportunities-picture farm fresh dinners in the field, gardening and cooking classes, and more. On August 14, the farm will host the Second Annual Tomato Tasting by the river. On September 4, visitors can enjoy the chili and chowder cook-off. Registration may be required for some special events, be sure to check the website (cedarcirclefarm.org) for up-to-date information.

Another interesting trip is on The Champlain Valley Flyer, which leaves from Burlington on special runs. On September 11, climb aboard for a Champlain Valley historical narration ride. This three-hour journey presents riders and rail buffs with the history of the Vermont rail. Foodies can enjoy a fall foliage dinner train ride on September 18, or a fall foliage buffet train ride on September 26. This adventure takes riders to Middlebury for lunch or dinner at the award-winning restaurant, Fire and Ice. Who could ask for anything more? Enjoy beautiful scenery, fine food, and there's no driving or cooking required.

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy a leisurely, peaceful ride alongside Vermont's sprawling hills and clear running waters. Riding the rail is a relaxing, nostalgic way to see more of Vermont's beautiful scenery and delights. All aboard!
